Thirty-six health systems and AI solution partners move forward with Applied Model Cards as a first step to solve overly complex Health AI procurement

March 3, 2025 – As we head into HIMSS, CHAI is thrilled to announce a growing movement within the community to move forward deploying CHAI Applied Model Cards (or the recently launched open-source version) moving from public comment and proof of concept to signal an important step for the healthcare ecosystem.

Applied Model Cards, or AI “nutrition labels,” will be used by health systems and solution providers to create a more standard way to present foundational information about AI solutions. Today, health system AI steering committees are frequently left to analyze highly technical materials, or marketing presentations among a wide range of inputs driving a needless complexity in the earliest stages of procurement.

“CHAI’s Applied Model Cards play a crucial role in the AI governance process by consolidating information in an easily digestible format, facilitating product comparisons, and providing standardized data that meets the needs of various stakeholders, from radiologists to legal teams”, said Dr. Elisabeth Garwood, radiologist and Associate Chief Medical Informatics Officer at UMass Memorial Health in Massachusetts.

Applied model cards are one example of many independent quality assurance resources that will empower health systems to assess and analyze innovative health AI solutions. Their use will help to simplify the process of sharing validation and testing results, as well as accelerate the development of models through trusted, independent entities.

“Innovation in health AI requires transparency, trust, and the ability to move quickly,” said Demetri Giannikopoulos, Chief Transformation Officer at Aidoc. “The CHAI Applied Model Card offers a streamlined format to demonstrate the capabilities, limitations, and technical details of our AI solutions, allowing vendors to build trust with providers, reduce redundancies in procurement, and demonstrate compliance with various regulatory requirements.”

As the movement builds around applied model cards, CHAI is partnering with Avanade, a leading Microsoft expert, to establish CHAI’s first Model Card registry. Powered by Avanade’s Smart AI Governance Engine (SAIGE), the registry established will enable health system AI solution evaluation and decision making teams to easily access Model Cards in a particular domain. For solutions providers, it will give access to a community of potential customers, and streamline the initial stages of procurement.
