About CHAI
The Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) is a mission-driven organization uniting academic medical centers, industry, and government to advance the responsible adoption of AI in health, ensuring high-quality, fair, and safe health AI implementation & governance. We build frameworks, open reference architectures, and operational standards to support health AI that benefits all communities.
As we grow, CHAI is seeking a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead our technical strategy, architecture, and execution across our strategic efforts, privacy-preserving data collaboration initiatives, and robust AI governance tooling for healthcare systems.
Role Overview
The CTO will drive CHAI's technical direction, working closely with the CEO, Brian Anderson, MD, policy leads, member institutions, and engineering partners to align CHAI’s frameworks with scalable, secure, and practical technical solutions for the healthcare ecosystem.
This role requires a balance of hands-on technical leadership, strategic vision, and deep understanding of health data ecosystems to ensure CHAI’s deliverables are practical, scalable, and interoperable with current and emerging healthcare AI workflows.
Key Responsibilities
Set and execute technical strategy to align with CHAI’s mission, ensuring alignment with evolving regulatory frameworks, including NIST RMF, AI Bill of Rights, and FDA guidance.
Lead the design and delivery of CHAI's reference best practice frameworks, as well as our nation-wide infrastructure for CHAI’s registry as well as our assurance resource providers for trustworthy health AI, including model evaluation, validation pipelines, and monitoring systems.
Oversee data infrastructure strategies enabling privacy-preserving federated learning and evaluation across multi-institutional health systems.
Provide oversight and leadership of the technical infrastructure supporting CHAI’s nation-wide registry of model cards and AI model performance data and evaluations.
Manage and mentor teams responsible for drafting technical best practice guidance, ensuring it is consensus-driven from CHAI’s working groups and reflects evolving community standards.
Guide and mentor technical staff and collaborating member institution engineers.
Drive technology partnerships with cloud providers, academic medical centers, and industry collaborators to scale CHAI’s impact.
Ensure robust security, compliance, and scalability within CHAI’s technical outputs.
Represent CHAI in public forums, technical working groups, and government convenings to ensure technical feasibility and clarity of standards adoption.
Develop and manage technical budgets, roadmaps, and resourcing in alignment with CHAI’s growth.
Travel up to 25% of the time for stakeholder engagement, site visits, strategic meetings, and conference presentations to advance CHAI’s mission and technical initiatives.
Qualifications
Proven technical leadership experience, ideally in a health AI, healthcare data infrastructure, or health tech startup environment.
Expertise in ML/AI development lifecycles, MLOps, model validation frameworks, and monitoring.
Strong understanding of privacy-preserving machine learning, federated learning, and differential privacy techniques.
Familiarity with health data interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7, OMOP, etc.) and healthcare system workflows.
Experience managing teams contributing to technical best practice documentation or standards development in multi-stakeholder settings.
Experience overseeing technical infrastructures supporting data registries or national-scale data systems is a plus.
Hands-on architecture experience with cloud-based infrastructures (AWS, Oracle, Azure, GCP).
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
A track record of advancing mission-driven work, ideally in open-source or public health initiatives.
Advanced degree (PhD or MS) in Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, or related field preferred.
